BBE Music’s J Jazz Volume 5 closes the celebrated series with another deep exploration of Japanese jazz from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, this final instalment moves through jazz-funk, fusion, soul jazz and rare private press discoveries, reflecting the era’s adventurous spirit.

Highlights include the fusion of Toshiyuki Honda and Mikio Masuda, Christal Zone’s elusive ‘Rai Rai’, Yasuhiro Kohno’s abstract take on ‘My Favourite Things’, and the relentless intensity of Mile and Half. Elsewhere, Seiichi Nakamura, Masaru Imada, Akira Miyazawa, Motohiko Hino and Masahiko Sato push from samba rhythms and soulful grooves into psychedelic and experimental territory.

Many of these tracks appear in reissue form for the first time, offering a fitting end to a series that helped bring Japanese jazz to a wider audience.
