John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass marked his first release for Impulse! Records and a decisive shift in his approach. Recorded with producer Creed Taylor at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, the album sees Coltrane enlarging his core group into a full ensemble, pairing his tenor and soprano lines with dense, low-end brass arrangements.

Compositions by Cal Massey, with arrangements from Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner, bring in tuba, euphonium and French horns, giving the music a weight and scale that moves beyond conventional big band form. Contributions from Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones anchor the sessions, as Coltrane stretches his improvisations against a broader, more forceful backdrop.

A key early statement for the label, Africa/Brass captures Coltrane opening up his music into something larger, heavier and more exploratory.

Mastered fully analogue from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. Comes in a Stoughton tip-on gatefold sleeve.
