Don Cherry’s 1966 debut Complete Communion returns in a reissue of one of free jazz’s most celebrated recordings. Having made his name on trumpet with the Ornette Coleman Quartet, appearing on classics like The Shape of Jazz to Come and Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation, Cherry was already a key figure in avant-garde jazz. He also worked alongside luminaries including John Coltrane and Sun Ra.

On Complete Communion, Cherry switched to cornet and led a quartet with tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri, bassist Henry Grimes, and drummer Ed Blackwell. Together they pushed the boundaries of the genre, linking complex musical figures with seamless, natural transitions. As Ekkehard Jost observed in his book Free Jazz, the album’s intricate structures and fluid interplay achieve “ensemble precision… accomplished with astonishing ease.” A landmark statement of creative freedom and collective energy.Don Cherry’s 1966 debut Complete Communion returns in a reissue of one of free jazz’s most celebrated recordings.
