Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, during April 1969. Herbie’s seventh and final album for Blue Note. Ambitious, uncharacteristically dark, politically-charged large-ensemble project from the piano master, a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. Featuring a fine rhythm section of Buster Williams (bass) and Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath (drums), plus Hubert Laws (flute), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Jerome Richardson (bass clarinet) and Garnett Brown (trombone). Repertoire features four spellbinding Hancock originals, plus Buster Williams’ ‘Firewater’. Produced by fellow BN pianist Duke Pearson. Liner notes by Herb Wong.

Blue Note Records Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analog, mastered-from-the-original-master-tape 180g audiophile vinyl reissues in deluxe gatefold packaging. Mastering is by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and vinyl is manufactured at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI).
