Threadbare (City Slang)
Rock / Pop
Threadbare features two relatively distinct sets of songs. One portion of the record
deals with tragedy, remorse, and bitterness head on, while the other half focuses on a new sense of identity, purpose, revelry and ambition.
What started as a generally light-hearted and loose follow up to All We Could Do Was Sing ended up being a more introspective and dense work that we used to cope with an overwhelming feeling of loss. With the passing of a dear loved one at the start of the year, heartache lingered throughout the recording of Threadbare. We recorded half of the album in San Francisco, in our friend Jason Quever's living room studio, which added the warmth we wanted to create in the more introspective songs. "High Without the Hope" and "In the Meantime" have a lyrical urgency that reflects the tumultuous times we had found ourselves in.
After we had spent weeks recording in San Francisco, we felt that we had purged ourselves of a lot of the things that were holding us back, and could record some songs in a more open space. We worked with Aaron Espinoza in Los Angeles to record the more celebratory and rhythmic songs that helped round out the other set of tunes. "Oslo Campfire" and "My Will is Good" describe the feelings of liberation that followed our decision to make changes to our life following tragedy.
